Family-run restaurants are back in fashion lately, but the three-generation-run Nikos Gyros in Seattle’s Magnolia neighborhood is no cliche.
Nikos Gyros has been a neighborhood favorite for more than 16 years, quietly earning stellar online reviews for its authentic gyros, flavorful Greek fries and tasty platters. It’s only fitting that this popular Greek restaurant is named after the third generation who works at this family eatery.
Opened by her father George who wanted a post-retirement project, Alexandra Serpanos today runs Nikos Gyros with plenty of family still around to help. At Alexandra’s side are her mother Mary, uncle Zussis, son Niko (the namesake) and of course, father George, all of whom contribute on a nearly daily basis to serve lunch and dinner six days per week.
Some people may think running a restaurant with your family sounds like a recipe for stress, but Alexandra insists they make an excellent team.
“It’s kind of like going to a party every day,” says Alexandra. “We really enjoy what we do. The best part of the job is interacting with the people.”Alexandra says Nikos Gyros always aims to make great food with generous portions at a reasonable price.
“It’s not trendy, it’s neighborhood, it’s family-friendly,” she says.
In 2013 Nikos Gyros started a new program to give back to the community that has supported it for nearly two decades. Normally closed on Sundays, Nikos Gyros opens its doors for lunch on the last Sunday of every month with all proceeds going to support a local charity it chooses for the month.
